New Delhi [India], June 12: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sambit Patra has called on the international community to strongly condemn the reported vandalism of Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Bangladesh, labeling the act as a direct attack on cultural heritage and civilizational values.
Speaking at a press conference at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Patra said that miscreants attacked Tagore’s historic Kacharibari, located in Bangladesh’s Kushtia district, on June 10. “The house, built by Tagore’s grandfather, was deliberately targeted and damaged,” Patra stated.
He alleged that radical groups Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam were behind the attack, claiming the incident was pre-planned over five days. “This was not just an act of vandalism, but a symbolic attack on the ideals and legacy of Rabindranath Tagore, a towering figure in literature, culture, and philosophy,” said the BJP leader.
Urging the global community to respond, Patra stated, “Rabindranath Tagore is no ordinary personality. When his house was attacked, his vision and philosophy were attacked. The BJP appeals to all nations that respect morality, creativity, and civilizational values to unite in condemning this act.”
He also criticized Bangladesh’s interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, holding them responsible for failing to protect what he termed an “international monument.”
“This issue goes beyond national borders. We are not interfering in Bangladesh’s internal affairs, but this concerns Rabindranath Tagore—a global icon and pride of Bengal and India. The failure to safeguard such a monument is unacceptable,” Patra said.
Reinforcing the BJP’s inclusive philosophy, he added, “We stand by the values of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Prayas. We urge the world to join us in rejecting such attacks on cultural heritage.”
