BJP To Focus On People’s Interests In J&K Budget Session Amid Calls For Statehood Restoration

Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India]: Shakti Parihar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Doda West Assembly Seat, stated on Monday that the party would focus on the interests of the people during the Budget Session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. He emphasized that the BJP would play the role of a constructive opposition.

Speaking to media, Parihar said,
“Today is the first day of the session. Today, LG will address the session…from tomorrow, proper debates will start…BJP will talk about the interest of the people and will play the role of a constructive opposition,” he remarked.

The Budget Session in Jammu and Kashmir commenced today, marking a significant moment for the region’s political landscape.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir reiterated the demand for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that the region’s 1.4 crore residents wish for it. He emphasized that the current status as a Union Territory is a significant obstacle to effectively serving the people.

Mir clarified that the demand for statehood restoration is not a partisan issue but a reflection of the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“This demand has nothing to do with the BJP or any other party but is instead a reflection of the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mir said.

The Congress party, in alliance with the National Conference (NC), is expected to raise the issue of statehood restoration prominently during the Budget Session. National Conference chief whip Mubarak Gul also echoed this sentiment, highlighting the widespread desire for statehood.
“… Discussions were held to run the upcoming session smoothly… and the issues of the people are raised… Everyone wants statehood to be restored. Every child of Jammu and Kashmir wants that,” Gul told ANI.

The restoration of Article 370, the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, and the implementation of the autonomy resolution were key promises in the National Conference’s manifesto for the Jammu and Kashmir elections.

In August 2019, the Central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi repealed Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, effectively ending the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir. This move restructured the region into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

As the Budget Session progresses, the demand for statehood restoration is expected to be a focal point of discussions, reflecting the region’s complex political dynamics and the aspirations of its people.
