BJP Protests Over Alleged Serving Of Protected ‘Wild Chicken’ At Himachal CM’s Event

Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh – ]: The Himachal Pradesh BJP intensified its protests on Thursday over the alleged serving of “wild chicken” to Chief Minister Sukhwinder Sukhu at a recent public event. Led by former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, the BJP has criticized the state government for the incident, calling it a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.

BJP Criticizes State Government

Jairam Thakur expressed alarm over the inclusion of “wild chicken” in the event’s menu, stating that the killing of wild roosters is a punishable offense under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. He accused the government of hypocrisy for attempting to suppress discussion on the matter.

“The menu clearly listed ‘wild chicken,’ and this is alarming as hunting protected species is illegal. Instead of acknowledging this, the government has decreed that cases be filed against those mentioning it, including journalists and politicians. This is a misuse of power,” Thakur said.

He also condemned the registration of a case against BJP MLA Sudheer Sharma, who had raised the issue on social media.

Controversy Surrounding the Event

The controversy erupted after a video, reportedly shared by an animal welfare organization, showed “wild chicken” being served at an event in Kufri, Shimla. The menu also included local dishes like bichu booti (a regional herb) and maize bread. While CM Sukhu denied consuming the dish, he acknowledged its presence on the menu.

Dharamshala MLA Sudheer Sharma noted, “The government must investigate the matter thoroughly. If the investigation confirms the serving of wild chicken, action must be taken under the Wildlife Protection Act. The truth will come out once the investigation begins.”

Calls for Accountability

The BJP and animal rights organizations have demanded an apology from the Chief Minister and strict action against those responsible for serving the protected species. BJP spokesperson Chetan Bharta stated, “The Chief Minister must issue a public apology and ensure accountability. This is a matter of both legality and ethics.”

Political Fallout

The controversy has heightened tensions between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in Himachal Pradesh. The BJP is using the incident to question the government’s commitment to wildlife conservation, while the Congress faces growing pressure to address the allegations.

As investigations proceed, the incident underscores the need for greater awareness and adherence to wildlife protection laws in public and political events.
