New Delhi [India], February 8: As trends pointed to a significant comeback for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Delhi Assembly elections after 27 years, BJP’s candidate Parvesh Verma, who is leading in the New Delhi constituency against AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal, credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the party’s success.
Verma, surrounded by jubilant BJP workers who cheered him on, raised the party’s flag and a placard with PM Modi’s image. Speaking to the media, Verma emphasized that the government to be formed in Delhi would align with PM Modi’s vision for the national capital.
“This government which is going to be formed in Delhi will bring PM Modi’s vision to Delhi. I give credit for this victory to PM Modi. I thank the people of Delhi. This is the victory of PM Modi and the people of Delhi,” Verma said.
Verma’s comments came as the former Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, trailed behind him by a margin of 4,099 votes.
According to the latest trends from the Election Commission, BJP leads in 48 seats, having won 5 and is leading in 43 others. Meanwhile, AAP is ahead in 27 seats, with 6 wins and 21 leads. Congress has yet to win a single seat, marking a third consecutive loss in the Delhi Assembly elections.
The BJP has already secured victories in three constituencies: Rekha Gupta (Shalimar Bagh), Manjinder Singh Sirsa (Rajouri Garden), and Chandan Kumar Choudhary (Sangam Vihar). AAP has claimed two victories, with Virender Singh Kadian winning from Delhi Cantt and Kuldeep Kumar from Kondli.
Meanwhile, AAP’s Manish Sisodia conceded his defeat to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah in the Jangpura constituency. Despite losing by just 600 votes, Sisodia thanked his supporters and expressed hope that the winning candidate would serve the constituency well.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva reiterated that the people of Delhi had rejected Arvind Kejriwal’s model of governance, citing issues such as water contamination, poor road conditions, sanitation problems, and pollution in the Yamuna River. “The situation in Delhi reflects Kejriwal’s model of governance, which the people have rejected,” Sachdeva said. “On the other hand, Modi ji’s model of good governance is one that the entire nation respects. People have chosen good governance,” he added.
Sachdeva also claimed that AAP’s prominent leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Atishi, and Saurabh Bharadwaj would lose because they had betrayed the public. “These are all faces of corruption. The people will not forgive them,” Sachdeva stated.
Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly was held on February 5, with a voter turnout recorded at 60.54%.
