Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], April 15: BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya has alleged that the demographic makeup of West Bengal’s border areas has been drastically altered, accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of enabling the influx of Rohingyas and Bangladeshi immigrants for political gains.
Bhattacharya claimed, “Those who once left India and called it ‘napaak’ are being welcomed back by TMC. Rohingyas and Bangladeshi immigrants are being allowed into West Bengal, bringing jihadi ideologies with them.”
Referring to recent tensions in Murshidabad, the BJP leader drew a parallel to the 1946 Calcutta killings, suggesting that the Mamata Banerjee government has taken the state back to an era of communal strife. “This place was once soaked in blood in 1946. Mamata Banerjee’s government has brought us back to those times,” he said.
Murshidabad recently witnessed violent protests over the Waqf Amendment Act, resulting in three deaths, multiple injuries, and widespread property damage. The BJP accused TMC MP Bapi Halder of making threatening remarks regarding those opposing Waqf-related changes.
In response to the unrest, West Bengal police have urged calm. ADG South Bengal, Supratim Sarkar, stated, “The situation is normal now. The CRPF, state police, and joint forces are deployed. DGP himself visited Samsherganj police station. A control room is operational for any grievances.”
The BJP continues to criticize the TMC’s alleged appeasement politics, while the state administration maintains that law and order is under control.
