New Delhi, February 4: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey on Tuesday filed a notice for alleged breach of privilege against Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of “ridiculing” the country in his recent speech in Parliament. Dubey wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting the initiation of privilege proceedings against the Congress leader.
In his letter, Dubey emphasized the need for urgent action, stating, “I request your good self to initiate Privilege proceedings against him on an urgent basis. I also wish to emphasise that since the parliament records and proceedings are the testimony to his incessant callous/irresponsible attitude.”
Rahul Gandhi had raised several issues in his speech on Monday, including the alleged capture of vast land by China in Eastern India and concerns over the appointment process for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners. Dubey accused Gandhi of distorting historical facts and attempting to “ridicule” the country while lowering the prestige of the nation’s republic.
Dubey also claimed that Rahul Gandhi had misused Article 105 of the Indian Constitution, which grants members of Parliament freedom of speech, by making unverified statements. “This ‘erudite’ person has neither authenticated his gibberish canards nor apologized for using the pious forum of Parliament to defame our country and the elected government,” Dubey wrote in his letter.
In his speech, Rahul Gandhi had controversially alleged, “China is sitting inside this country because ‘Make in India’ has failed” and questioned the Prime Minister’s denial of Chinese presence in Indian territory. He further claimed that, despite the Prime Minister’s denial, the Indian Army continues to engage with the Chinese over their presence in the region. Gandhi also raised concerns about the removal of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the selection committee for appointing the CEC and other Election Commissioners, calling it a “calculated strategy.”
