New Delhi [India]: A high-level meeting of senior BJP leaders was convened at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on Wednesday to discuss the party’s upcoming organisational elections, with a key focus on the selection of the next National President.
The strategic gathering was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh, party sources confirmed.
Central to the discussion was the impending election of the BJP’s National President, with sources indicating that an official announcement could be made within the next week. The internal poll process, originally scheduled for January, is now expected to begin any time after April 20.
The delay in holding the election is attributed to a deliberate and strategic selection process, aimed at choosing a leader capable of strengthening the party’s national and grassroots apparatus ahead of future elections.
Currently serving as party president, J.P. Nadda has held the role since January 2020, with his term extended beyond the standard three-year period to ensure organisational continuity during a crucial political phase.
According to the BJP constitution, the National President is elected typically by consensus within the party, and the term is three years.
In addition to national-level leadership, the meeting also focused on a comprehensive state-level organisational reshuffle. Party sources revealed that names for new BJP state presidents in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh were actively considered.
The BJP is expected to announce changes to approximately half a dozen state units within the next two to three days, a move likely to play a pivotal role in shaping the party’s strategy in forthcoming state and general elections.
The BJP leadership views these changes as critical to reinforcing its organisational strength and aligning with its long-term electoral roadmap.
