New Delhi [India]: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Meenakshi Lekhi on Saturday reassured that the newly formed Delhi government is fully committed to cleaning the Yamuna River, promising visible results soon.
Speaking to the media, Lekhi stated:
“The BJP had a pledge, and we are known for working on our pledges. We had taken an oath and promised that we would work towards cleaning Yamuna and would clean it. I am satisfied that the BJP’s Delhi government is fully engaged in this work, and soon we will see good results.”
Cleaning the Yamuna River was a key electoral issue during the Delhi Assembly elections in February, in which the BJP secured victory. Following the elections, the new government has focused on cleaning drains and sewage systems to prevent waterlogging ahead of the monsoon season.
Delhi Government’s Actions
- Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma conducted an inspection of roads and drains in Trilokpuri and Patparganj on Friday.
- During the inspection, Verma identified major issues related to drain maintenance, leading to the suspension of Executive Engineer Ramashish Singh.
- He stated:
“It is the job of PWD to clean drains, but that is absolutely not being done. So, I have ordered the suspension of XEN (Executive Engineer) here. All officers have been clearly told that if they do not work properly, action will be taken. We can’t leave Delhi, our capital, like this.”
Verma inspected key areas, including New Ashok Nagar Metro Station, Chilla Village in Trilokpuri, and parts of Patparganj Assembly Constituency. Officials from the Jal Board, PWD, and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were present during the review.
Highlighting the challenges and solutions, Verma added:
“There are several issues. We saw encroachment at several locations. We have directed the removal of encroachment because if everyone encroaches above drains, its cleaning won’t be possible, and the water won’t pass during the monsoon season and enter the houses.”
He further stated that similar issues exist across Delhi, and officers are being directed to resolve them immediately.
“Desilting of all drains will be done before the monsoon on a war footing so that water passes through drains instead of entering houses. Our priority is to finish this before the monsoon.”
The BJP-led Delhi government is now focused on swift implementation of Yamuna cleaning and city-wide drainage maintenance, aiming for tangible improvements before the rainy season.
