The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday intensified its attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the alleged gangrape of a female student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25 in Kolkata.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul demanded Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, just hours after Kolkata Police arrested the college guard in connection with the case.
On the fourth arrest made in the case, Paul told media, “…It is high time now…Mamata Banerjee should resign. We want security for women…”
Expressing dissatisfaction over the investigation and alleging administrative negligence, Paul said:
“We do not have anything to speak on it because arrests are made, minor sections are invoked, and when people forget about the case, the accused are released…This is what has been happening…But it is good that in this case the victim has not been murdered. We are with her…Where was the college authority when this (crime) happened? Where was the governing body? Where was the security?”
She further criticised the TMC leadership, saying:
“Mamata Banerjee will have to answer…She was brutally assaulted by the three accused…It is high time now…Mamata Banerjee should resign. We want security for women. Get elections done at every student union and have principals. This college has no principal, and the acting vice principal is very close to the TMC…”
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police on Saturday arrested Pinaki Banerjee (55), the guard of South Calcutta Law College, marking the fourth arrest in the case.
The alleged gangrape occurred inside the college premises in Kolkata’s Kasba area on Wednesday, sparking widespread outrage.
Earlier, police had arrested three individuals within 24 hours of the incident. The accused were identified as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) — all former students or staff of the same law college.
Police stated that the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a request for police custody to conduct a thorough investigation.
