Madurai (Tamil Nadu): BJP leader Kushboo Sundar has demanded “justice” for the student allegedly sexually assaulted at Anna University in Chennai. Speaking to reporters, Sundar emphasized the need for justice for the victim.
Earlier, BJP’s women’s wing in Tamil Nadu staged a protest against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government, leading a “Justice rally” from Madurai to Chennai. The rally was aimed at raising awareness about the incident and was followed by the detention of BJP members by the police.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar Criticizes DMK Government
BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar also slammed the Tamil Nadu government for its handling of the case, accusing the DMK of covering up the matter because the accused, Ganashekharan, is a DMK functionary.
Chandrasekhar criticized the government for not pursuing justice, stating, “This is clearly an exposure of how INDI alliance parties talk about political gains but do not at all practice the spirit and letter of the Constitution. This young girl was raped brutally at Anna University…she has been looking for justice but because the rapist is a DMK functionary, the Police and the government are busy trying to cover that up.”
He further described the police’s actions against the BJP’s protest as a “violation of the constitutional right” of BJP workers to protest and seek justice.
Details of the Incident
The sexual assault allegedly took place on December 23, 2024, at Anna University in Chennai, where a second-year engineering student was sexually assaulted by a group of men. The victim’s companions were also reportedly subjected to violence. The main accused, Ganashekharan, was arrested following public outrage.
It has since been revealed that Ganashekharan is reportedly a DMK functionary, with several instances and evidence linking him to the party’s leadership. Chandrasekhar further expressed concern over what he described as “lawlessness” prevailing under the DMK-governed Tamil Nadu.
Legal Developments
In response to the case, the Madras High Court has ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising three IPS officers to thoroughly investigate the alleged sexual assault. The move comes amid growing calls for transparency and accountability in handling the case.
