BJP cannot back Away From The Responsibility”: Akhilesh On Mahakumbh Stampede

New Delhi [India],January 30: Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief Akhilesh Yadav criticized both the BJP-led Central government and the Uttar Pradesh state government over the tragic stampede at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, which resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and left 60 others injured.

Speaking to ANI, Yadav held both the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh governments accountable for the incident. He argued that better management and administration could have prevented the tragedy, stating, “If the administration had been more efficient, this incident might not have occurred.” He also pointed out that there were warnings about the large number of devotees expected to attend, yet the necessary precautions seemed lacking.

Yadav demanded an increase in the financial compensation for the families of the deceased, stating that the current amount of Rs 25 lakh was insufficient. He further urged the government to release an official list of the deceased and missing persons to clear up confusion among the public.

He also questioned how the government could not have been aware of the situation, given that he himself received information about the incident at 2:48 AM. “If I could know, the government should have known too,” he remarked, adding that the distribution of invitation cards by the government, a practice not seen in previous years, may have contributed to the chaos.

Despite his strong criticism, Yadav, who is in Delhi campaigning for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, chose not to visit the victims’ families. He explained, “If I visit, the BJP will accuse me of politicizing the issue, and we don’t want to do that.”

The stampede occurred early on January 29, and authorities confirmed that 30 people were killed, with 60 injured. Among the deceased were individuals from Karnataka, Assam, and Gujarat. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident, with a report expected to be submitted within a set timeframe.

The ongoing Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26. Upcoming key dates include February 3 (Basant Panchami—Third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).
