The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Parliamentary board announced on Sunday the appointment of Nitin Nabin as the party’s new working president. This appointment comes into effect immediately, following the conclusion of the term of the current president, JP Nadda. Nadda’s term had ended in 2024 but was previously extended to oversee the 2024 general election.
Nitin Nabin, an upper caste leader and a cabinet minister in the Bihar Government, will take over the reins from Nadda. Nadda himself was first appointed as working president in June 2019 when the then-president Amit Shah joined the Union cabinet as the Home Minister. Nadda was formally declared the national president in January 2020.
The decision to give Nadda, who is also the Union Minister for Health, an extension until the general elections concluded, was made at the BJP’s national executive committee meeting in January 2024.
Nabin faces the immediate task of leading the party as it prepares for upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry. He will continue in this role unless the party announces a new full-time president before the scheduled elections.
According to the party’s constitution, the president’s term can be for two consecutive terms of three years each. The election process for the national president involves a membership drive and organizational polls across various levels in at least 50% of the states, with the candidature proposed by the states and the parliamentary party.
