New Delhi [India]: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mohan Singh Bisht has made serious allegations against certain Delhi police personnel, claiming they are “trying to create a situation similar to the 2020 Delhi riots.” He announced plans to lodge a complaint with the Delhi Commissioner of Police and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The BJP leader specifically named a police officer, Rizwan, accusing him of being a “threat to Hindu-Muslim unity.”
“We have received a complaint that some policemen came to Karawal Nagar police station with the intention to create a situation similar to Delhi riots 2020… Rizwan, one of the policemen, is a threat to Hindu-Muslim unity. We will complain against him to the CP and Union Home Minister,” Bisht told ANI.
The 2020 Northeast Delhi riots resulted in approximately 53 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The violence was allegedly part of a larger conspiracy involving multiple individuals.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings related to the riots are ongoing. On February 18, a Delhi sessions court stayed a magistrate’s order directing the registration of an FIR against a station house officer (SHO) and other police personnel for alleged hate crimes during the riots. The SHO had challenged the order in the Karkardooma sessions court, which ruled that proceeding with the FIR could impact the ongoing case.
Additionally, on February 20, the Delhi High Court heard rebuttal arguments from the legal team of Umar Khalid, an accused in the larger conspiracy case. His counsel argued that Khalid did not post any mobilization messages and that merely being part of a WhatsApp group does not imply wrongdoing.
Khalid, along with Sharjeel Imam, Abdul Khalid Saifi, Athar Khan, and others, has been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for alleged involvement in the riots. The High Court, after hearing arguments, adjourned the matter for further proceedings on March 4.
The case continues to be a significant legal and political issue, with both law enforcement and political leaders facing scrutiny over their roles in the events of 2020.
