Nancy and Rich Kinder, two billionaires from Houston, have said they will give 95% of their $11 billion wealth to charities in the city that helped them become successful. This will be a huge boost for Houston’s nonprofit scene.
In a recent interview with ABC13 Houston, the Kinders repeated their generous promise to give most of their money to help important local areas like parks, schools, and the arts. Rich Kinder thought about how lucky they were and said, “We’ve been very lucky.” A lot of other individuals have helped you get the money you have.
People who signed The Giving Pledge first
Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett started The Giving Pledge, a well-known campaign, in 2010. The couple were some of the first people to sign it. The world’s richest philanthropists have promised to give most of their money to charity, either while they are alive or after they die.
The Most Generous Donors in the World
The Kinders’ amazing promise makes them one of the most important benefactors in the world. As Forbes recently revealed, they are now on a list of people who have already given a lot of money to different organizations. The magazine looked at lifetime giving as a percentage of net worth:
Warren Buffett: Buffett and his family are at the top of the list for the most money given to the campaign, with a lifetime contribution of $62 billion. His donating is 30% of his net worth of $146.7 billion.
Bill and Melinda Gates: The former couple and fellow Giving Pledge creators are placed second, having given away $47.7 billion during their lifetimes. They have given 26% of their total net wealth of $108.6 billion (Bill) and $30.3 billion (Melinda) to charity.
George Soros, the billionaire and creator of the Open Society Foundations, is in third place with $23 billion given throughout his lifetime. This amount is an impressive 76 percent of his net worth.
Michael Bloomberg: The man who started Bloomberg LP has given $21.1 billion in his lifetime. His total worth is $104.7 billion, and he gives out 17% of that to charity.
Scott is sixth on the list. She is the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos and one of the most active modern contributors in the world. She has given $19.25 billion so far, which is 36% of her estimated net worth of $33.6 billion.
