Bill Cosby Remembers Malcolm-Jamal Warner As “Professional” And “Great Studier” After Tragic Drowning

July 24, 2025: Bill Cosby, a veteran actor, has revealed his personal memories of working with Malcolm-Jamal Warner on “The Cosby Show.” Warner died accidentally at the age of 54 when he drowned, according to Variety.

Warner died on Sunday while swimming off the coast of Costa Rica in the Caribbean during a family vacation. Local officials said that the actor was caught in a strong current. Warner could not be revived, even though beachgoers and first responders tried right away.

Cosby talked about Warner’s lasting legacy on and off screen in an interview with ABC News that Variety quoted. He thought of Warner as “very professional” and “a great studier.” “I really liked working with him,” Cosby said. He always knew what to do, where to go, and what to say.

Warner’s character Theo Huxtable was partially based on Cosby’s real-life son Ennis, who was killed in 1997. Cosby said that Warner and Ennis were friends when they were younger, which made him think of the two young men. Cosby also said that he kept a father-son relationship with Warner long after “The Cosby Show” ended its eight-season run from 1984 to 1992. “Malcolm calls here a lot.” “I was their TV dad, but I was always their dad,” Cosby said, according to Variety.

Wyatt said that Cosby has stayed in touch with other “Cosby Show” stars, such as Phylicia Rashad, who played his wife Clair Huxtable on the show.

After “The Cosby Show,” Warner had a long and successful career. People liked his work in shows like “Reed Between the Lines,” “The Resident,” and “Sons of Anarchy.” He reached a big goal in 2015 when he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance. Variety said that Warner has spent the last few years working on a podcast that looked at issues of Black identity and cultural past.

More than 60 women accused Cosby of sexual assault and other wrongdoings over the course of decades. He was once one of television’s most respected stars. He spent three years in prison after being found guilty in 2018, but that decision was later reversed on appeal. Cosby still says he didn’t do anything wrong.
