Bihar Assembly Descends Into Chaos Over Voter List Revision; BJP Condemns “Humiliation Of Legislature”

Patna (Bihar) [India], July 25 – The Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President, Dilip Jaiswal, has strongly condemned the unruly scenes witnessed in the Bihar Legislative Assembly a day earlier, describing the events as a “humiliation of the legislature.” The chaos erupted amidst a heated debate over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a crucial process ahead of the state elections.

Speaking to ANI, Jaiswal expressed his dismay, stating, “…All limits were crossed yesterday in the assembly when violence erupted. I think the legislature has been humiliated after what happened yesterday…”

The monsoon session of the Bihar Assembly descended into pandemonium on Thursday following a verbal altercation between members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition. The flashpoint was the controversial SIR process, which the Opposition has heavily criticized.

BJP Accuses Opposition of Politicizing, Opposition Demands National Discussion

The BJP leader further accused the Opposition of “politicizing” the issue and questioned their faith in the Supreme Court. “The whole country knows that the SIR exercise is being monitored by the Supreme Court. Do they not have faith in the Supreme Court as well? The ECI has assured that no legitimate voter will be left out… They are just politicising the whole thing…” Jaiswal asserted.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the voter list revision in Bihar has now escalated to the national stage. Several opposition parliamentarians in the Rajya Sabha moved Suspension of Business notices today, Friday, urging a detailed discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh submitted a notice demanding a detailed discussion on the SIR process in Bihar, highlighting significant concerns over the voter list revision. Similarly, Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan also gave a notice under Rule 267, pressing for an immediate dialogue on the same issue. Another Congress MP, Ashok Singh, moved a separate notice, seeking clarity and discussion on the Bihar SIR exercise. Additionally, Congress Rajya Sabha MPs Neeraj Dangi and Rajani Patil also submitted Suspension of Business Notices under Rule 267, reinforcing the collective call for a thorough discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in Bihar.

Earlier on Thursday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) stated that 99 percent of electors have already been covered under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar, attempting to allay some concerns.
