Riyadh [Saudi Arabia]: Union Minister for Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav addressed the Ministerial Dialogue on Drought Resilience at the 16th Conference of Parties (CoP16) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh. The minister detailed India’s strategies to address land degradation and desertification, aligning with the UNCCD’s objectives.
India’s Commitment to Land Restoration
Yadav highlighted India’s recognition of land degradation as a socio-economic issue. He referenced India’s presidency at CoP14, during which the country committed to restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030.
“It was during India’s presidency at CoP 14, under the dynamic and inspiring leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, that we proudly presented our commitment to restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030,” he stated.
The minister also shared India’s establishment of a Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Land Management, aimed at promoting scientific approaches and sharing expertise globally.
Innovative Strategies and Global Partnerships
Yadav emphasized India’s transition from reactive drought responses to proactive strategies focused on preparedness and prevention. He highlighted the role of institutions like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Remote Sensing Centre in providing drought vulnerability assessments, real-time monitoring, and early warnings.
India’s initiatives, such as soil health cards for farmers and the promotion of organic farming, were outlined as key measures to enhance sustainability and resilience in agriculture. Yadav also noted India’s contribution to the G-20 goal of planting 1 trillion trees by 2030 to create carbon sinks.
“India’s efforts in land restoration not only address challenges like food security and climate change but also create green jobs, enhancing rural prosperity,” Yadav said.
Global Collaboration and Commitment to SDGs
During the CoP16, Yadav underscored India’s efforts to align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through proactive land and ecosystem restoration. He pledged to protect fragile ecosystems, enhance livelihoods, and contribute to global climate action.
On the sidelines of the conference, Yadav held bilateral meetings with Saudi Arabia and Kenya’s ministers to discuss sustainable development and mutual interests.
