Brisbane [Australia], December 11: Australia’s Nathan McSweeney is eager to face off against Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah in front of his home crowd during the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, confident about “throwing a few more punches” after learning from previous encounters.
During the day-night Test in Adelaide, McSweeney stood strong alongside teammate Usman Khawaja to see off the opening day, after Australia’s bowlers restricted India to a modest total of 180. However, Bumrah’s bowling attack, armed with the new ball, had the Australian duo on edge. McSweeney managed to remain unbeaten by the close of play, putting up a solid performance alongside Marnus Labuschagne.
Though McSweeney was dismissed by Bumrah for 39 runs the following morning, his effort played a key role in Australia’s success. Having taken on the unfamiliar role of opener during the first Test, McSweeney has faced challenges against Bumrah, with a tough record of three dismissals in 46 balls for just 11 runs.
“Facing a bowler like Jasprit early in my career, it doesn’t get much tougher than that. I take confidence from surviving a spell in Adelaide,” McSweeney said, reflecting on his experience. “The more I face him, the more comfortable I’ll become.”
Acknowledging Bumrah’s unique and world-class bowling style, McSweeney expressed confidence in his ability to adapt and improve. “It’s about adapting to his angle and delivery from the crease. I got two pretty good balls from him [in Perth], so I’ve just got to wear that on the chin and trust that what I’ve been doing will be good enough,” he explained.
Despite struggling in previous encounters, McSweeney relishes the challenge and looks forward to future battles with Bumrah. “He got me again in Adelaide—he’s a great bowler. I’m really enjoying the challenge of figuring out a game plan on the go against a world-class player. Hopefully, I’ll improve the more I face him and can throw a few more punches here at the Gabba,” he concluded.
