Adelaide [Australia], December 4: Australia’s veteran spinner Nathan Lyon has expressed confidence in Mitchell Marsh playing a role with the ball during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India in Adelaide, which begins on Friday.
Marsh’s fitness has been a concern for Australia ahead of the second Test, with uncapped all-rounder Beau Webster being added to the squad as a potential cover. Despite this, Lyon remains confident in Marsh’s ability, particularly following his strong performances since his return to the Australian squad last year.
“Honestly, I think we’ll see Mitch Marsh bowl. I’m not concerned about Bison’s fitness. He’s been brilliant for us since his return. He came back in that game in Leeds during the Ashes and really dominated, so I have full confidence in him,” Lyon said on Wednesday, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Marsh’s batting has played a key role in his selection, with an impressive average of 40 since his return. Lyon, who has frequently played alongside Marsh and Cameron Green, also noted the team’s flexibility in deploying Marsh as a bowler when needed.
“I’m very clear on my role within the team. Nothing changes for me. If I can bowl more overs, I’ll happily do it,” Lyon added, reflecting on his role as both an attacking and defensive option depending on the match situation.
Lyon also acknowledged Australia’s disappointing loss in the first Test in Perth, where India triumphed by a record 295 runs. However, he emphasized the team’s ability to bounce back in a five-match series.
“We didn’t play our best cricket in Perth, and India outplayed us. But it’s been quite humorous seeing the reactions from everyone after one loss. The beauty of a five-match series is that we get another opportunity to turn things around,” Lyon said.
With Josh Hazlewood ruled out due to a mild side strain, Scott Boland is expected to replace him in the pink-ball Test. Hazlewood participated in training in Adelaide, but his absence will be felt as Australia aims to recover from their opening-match defeat.
