Sydney [Australia], January 1: Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey provided an update on pacer Mitchell Starc’s fitness on Wednesday, confirming that the 34-year-old will be ready for the upcoming Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
Australia secured an 184-run victory in the Melbourne Test, taking a 2-1 lead in the series and effectively ending India’s chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s.
Starc had struggled with an upper-body issue during the Melbourne Test, with visible discomfort as he clutched his back during spells on Day 3. Despite his fitness concerns, the star pacer bowled at full pace on Day 5, helping Australia successfully defend a target of 330 runs and clinch the Boxing Day Test win.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Carey expressed confidence in Starc’s recovery and readiness for the Sydney Test.
“He’ll be fine. Yeah, he’ll push through. I’ve played with Starc for a long time now, and he’s one of the toughest cricketers I’ve played with. He’ll grimace, he’ll grab his rib no doubt, but he’ll be ready for the contest,” Carey said.
Australia set a target of 340 runs for India on Day 5 of the Melbourne Test. Despite having the entire day to chase the target, India was bundled out for 155 in 80 overs by Australia’s fiery bowling attack. Pat Cummins was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his excellent performance with both bat and ball.
The final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3.
