‘Business Only’: BCCI Bars Team India Families from T20 World Cup Campaign

In a move to ensure “absolute focus” and eliminate distractions, the BCCI has officially rejected a request from the Indian team management to allow players’ families to stay with them during the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The decision, reported on February 10, 2026, reinforces a strict disciplinary code implemented following India’s disappointing results in the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The policy applies to the entire duration of the tournament, meaning stars like Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah will be without their spouses and children in the team hotel.

The “No Exceptions” Policy

The Indian team management had reportedly sought “clarity” on whether wives, fiancées, and partners could accompany the players, especially since the tournament is being co-hosted at home and in neighboring Sri Lanka.

  • The Ruling: The BCCI categorically stated that while families are free to travel and make their own independent arrangements, they cannot stay in the team hotel or travel on the team’s private charter flights.
  • The Reason: Sources indicate that during previous tours, the presence of families led to players missing informal tactical meetings and planning sessions. The board wants a “team-first” environment for the duration of this marquee event.
  • Gautam Gambhir’s Stance: Head Coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly backed the board, previously stating that players are on “national duty,” not a “vacation.”

The 45-Day Rule

The BCCI’s standard family policy typically allows families to join players for a maximum of 14 days, but only if an overseas tour exceeds 45 days.

  • The Catch: Since the T20 World Cup spans roughly 30 days, it does not meet the criteria for even the 14-day relaxation.
  • Strict Logistics: To further control the environment, even the players’ personal chefs have been barred from staying in the team hotel. They are required to stay in separate accommodations and deliver meals to the squad.
