BCCI announces India’s Squad For ODI Series Against Australia

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today announced India’s ODI and T20I squads for the forthcoming white-ball series against Australia, scheduled to commence on October 19. The series will feature three One Day Internationals (ODIs) followed by a five-match T20 International series.

In a landmark decision, the BCCI has appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, taking over from the highly successful Rohit Sharma. Promising middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, who was the second-highest run-scorer in the recent ICC Champions Trophy 2025, has been named his deputy for the ODIs.

The transition, however, is being managed with caution, as both former ODI captain Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli have been included in the 15-member ODI squad, ensuring the team benefits from their vast experience during this leadership shift.

This tour marks India’s first ODI assignment since their glorious campaign at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where the Rohit Sharma-led side defeated New Zealand in the final at the Dubai International Stadium to lift the title.

Why the Captaincy Change?

The decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the ODI captain is rooted in a strategic, long-term vision. According to sources quoted by Cricinfo, the selectors are keen for Gill to settle into the role well ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027, which is set to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

“It was a tough call to remove someone from captaincy who has been so very successful. But sometimes we have to take such decisions from the team’s perspective, looking at the future,” Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar told the media, confirming the collective decision taken in coordination with India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. Agarkar also cited the need for stability and consolidation of leadership across formats, noting it was “practically impossible” to maintain three different captains.

Notable Squad Omissions and Additions

In terms of selection, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI series to effectively manage his workload. All-rounders Hardik Pandya and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant miss out as they are still recovering from injuries—a quad injury and a fractured right foot, respectively.

This has opened the door for new talents: Nitish Kumar Reddy and wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel have been named in the ODI squad. Left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also earned a recall to the 50-over setup following a string of consistent performances in T20 internationals.

Senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has not been included in the ODI squad, while Axar Patel will be joined by spinners Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav, and pacers Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna.
