The low-pressure system currently situated near Malaysia and the Strait of Malacca is expected to undergo significant intensification, likely developing into a depression over the South Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is forecast to strengthen further and could potentially evolve into Cyclone Senyar by November 26. The name ‘Senyar’ was submitted by the United Arab Emirates and means a ‘lion’—it is the next designated name for a cyclonic storm in the North Indian Ocean.
IMD Weather Warnings and Forecast
IMD scientist Sanjeev Dwivedi noted that the system would move in a “west-northwest direction.” Given the expected intensification, the IMD has issued a severe weather warning for the region:
“Avoid sea travel, secure essentials, follow official updates & move to safe shelters if required,” the IMD stated in its advisory.
The weather department has predicted the following conditions:
- Andaman Sea and Coastal Malaysia: Heavy rains, strong wind gusts, and choppy seas are highly likely over the South Andaman Sea, the Strait of Malacca, and coastal Malaysia.
- Another Low-Pressure Area: Separately, a low-pressure area is also likely to form over Comorin and the adjoining areas of the southwest Bay of Bengal and Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Heavy Rainfall Alert for Coastal States
The cyclonic activity is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple coastal regions in South India this week:
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted between November 25 and November 29 (Tuesday to Saturday).
- Southern Coastal States: Heavy to very heavy rains are also likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam.
- Odisha: If the system intensifies as predicted, it may also trigger rains in some coastal districts of Odisha between November 25 and 27.
The IMD continues to monitor the system’s trajectory and strength, urging residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant and adhere to official advisories.
