As India celebrates mid-winter harvest festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Pongal, Magh Bihu, and Uttarayana Punyakala, banks in several states will remain closed on January 14 and 15, 2026. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, these holidays are recognized under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
January 14, 2026 – Bank Holidays:
Banks will be closed in some eastern and northeastern states including:
- Agartala
- Aizawl
- Bhubaneswar
- Imphal
- Itanagar
- Kohima
- Kolkata
- Shillong
January 15, 2026 – Bank Holidays:
Banks in major metros and states including:
- Mumbai
- Bengaluru
- Chennai
- Hyderabad
- Bhubaneswar
- Vijayawada
These holidays coincide with regional harvest festivals and mark the end of winter and the beginning of a new agricultural season.
