Bangladesh Youth Leader Sharif Osman Hadi To Be Buried Beside National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam

Dhaka:
Bangladesh’s youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi will be laid to rest beside the grave of the country’s national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on Saturday, following a decision taken at the request of his family, according to an announcement by Inqilab Mancha.

In a social media post, Inqilab Mancha — the platform for which Hadi served as a spokesperson — stated that his funeral prayer (janaza) will be held after Zuhr prayers at Manik Mia Avenue. “Upon the family’s wishes, a decision has been taken to bury Hadi beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam,” the organisation said.

Hadi died after being shot, treatment in Singapore failed

Sharif Osman Hadi passed away on Thursday while undergoing medical treatment in Singapore. He had been critically injured after being shot by unidentified assailants last Friday, December 12. Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus confirmed Hadi’s death in a televised address to the nation.

Following the announcement, widespread protests erupted across Bangladesh, with several demonstrations turning violent as anger grew over the killing of the prominent youth leader.

Body brought to Dhaka, funeral schedule announced

Hadi’s mortal remains were flown back from Singapore to Dhaka on Friday evening. Muhammad Yunus later announced via a post on X that the funeral prayer would take place on Saturday at 2:00 pm at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The timing was earlier stated as 2:30 pm before being revised.

In the same post, Yunus issued security-related instructions to attendees. “Those who will attend the funeral prayer for Shaheed Osman Hader are especially requested not to carry any bags or heavy items,” the statement read. It also warned that flying drones in and around the Parliament House area is strictly prohibited.

Inqilab Mancha issues appeal to supporters

Upon the arrival of Hadi’s body in Dhaka, Inqilab Mancha urged its supporters and the general public to remain disciplined and not act on any directives outside the organisation’s official instructions.

“The Inqilab Moncho will be coming to the Dhaka University Central Mosque with the martyr Osman Hadi. Students and the general public will occupy the streets and continue chanting slogans demanding justice,” the group said in a statement.

It further cautioned supporters: “Do not heed any instructions or provocations from anyone other than the Inqilab Moncho.”

As Bangladesh prepares to bid farewell to Sharif Osman Hadi, security has been heightened across key areas of the capital amid fears of renewed unrest.
