Bangladesh All-Rounder Mahmudullah Announces Retirement From International Cricket

Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Mahmudullah has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career. The 39-year-old, who had previously stepped away from Tests in 2021 and T20Is in 2024, made the announcement on Wednesday via social media.

Expressing gratitude to his supporters, Mahmudullah wrote on Facebook:

“All praises only for the Almighty Allah. I have decided to retire from international cricket. I would like to thank all of my team-mates, coaches and especially my fans who have always supported me. A big thank you to my parents, my in-laws, especially my father-in-law & most importantly my brother Emdad Ullah, who has been there for me constantly since my childhood as my coach & mentor.”

He further acknowledged his family’s unwavering support, saying:

“And finally, thanks to my wife & kids, who have been my support system through thick & thin. I know Raeid will miss me in red and green jersey. Not everything comes to an end in a perfect way, but you say yes and move forward. Peace, Alhamdulillah. Best wishes to my team & Bangladesh cricket.”

Mahmudullah leaves as Bangladesh’s fourth-highest run-scorer in ODIs, amassing 5689 runs at an average of 36.46, including four centuries and 32 fifties. His retirement follows that of his brother-in-law, Mushfiqur Rahim, who recently bid farewell to ODIs.

A true performer in ICC tournaments, all four of Mahmudullah’s ODI centuries came in global events. He made history with back-to-back hundreds in the 2015 ODI World Cup, followed by an unbeaten 102 against New Zealand in the 2017 Champions Trophy. His most recent milestone was a 111-run knock against South Africa in Mumbai during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Mahmudullah played his final international match in the Champions Trophy, where he scored 4 off 14 balls against New Zealand in Rawalpindi.

His contribution to Bangladesh cricket will be remembered for years, as he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, consistency, and leadership.
