Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], April 15: The Indian Army’s Azmat-e-Hind initiative in the Teetwal area of Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir, is redefining the region’s image by boosting border tourism and fostering a sense of unity and pride. Once primarily known for cross-border tensions, Teetwal has now become a symbol of hope, resilience, and patriotism.
The centrepiece of this transformation is a towering 104-foot high national flag installed at the Line of Control (LoC), symbolizing the valour of the Indian Armed Forces, the spirit of the local communities, and the natural beauty of India’s frontier areas.
“Azmat-e-Hind was created in 2023 in Teetwal with the purpose of encouraging tourism in these remote areas. We want people to come, experience the region, and witness the harmony between the Army and the local population,” said Brigadier SK Pradhan, Commander of the Shakti Vijay Brigade.
To support this initiative, the Army has helped establish home stays and trained local residents to host and manage tourists effectively. “Our goal is to make sure every visitor leaves with a great experience and recommends this place to others,” the Brigadier added.
A statement from the Indian Army highlighted their comprehensive role in the area’s transformation—from providing security to facilitating infrastructure and logistics. The Army has ensured the village is both welcoming and safe for visitors.
One of the most moving moments for tourists is participating in the national flag hoisting ceremony, where they stand shoulder to shoulder with soldiers in a heartfelt salute to the tricolour.
The Army also holds interactive sessions with tourists and students, sharing inspiring stories of bravery and service, thus strengthening the bond between the armed forces and civilians.
Locals have welcomed the changes with optimism. The boost in tourism is already contributing to the local economy, creating new opportunities for residents.
Sunder Shamin, a student at Army Goodwill High School, expressed pride in the initiative. “The 104-foot high flag is not just a symbol of our unity but also a tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during wars. This village stands for unity in diversity,” he said.
He also encouraged others to visit Teetwal, noting its historical and cultural richness, including the presence of the Sharda Temple and a Gurudwara that reflect the region’s inclusive spirit.
The Azmat-e-Hind memorial, established on November 21, 2023, has also hosted key events like International Yoga Day and youth exchange programs, further cementing its role as a hub for national integration and awareness.
