Iowa [US], June 30: India’s Ayush Shetty marked a career breakthrough by winning his maiden BWF World Tour title at the US Open 2025, defeating third-seeded Canadian Brian Yang 21-18, 21-13 in the men’s singles final on Sunday.
Shetty, ranked as India’s second-highest men’s singles player, also became the first Indian to win a World Tour title this season. His impressive run included a semifinal upset over top seed and World No. 6 Chou Tien-Chen, underscoring his emergence as a major force on the international badminton circuit.
In women’s singles, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma captured national attention with a fearless march to the final. On her way, the youngster beat four top-60 opponents, including World Ranks 23, 40, 50, and 58, showcasing maturity and attacking prowess far beyond her years.
Although Tanvi eventually lost to top seed Beiwen Zhang of the USA in a hard-fought three-game final (11-21, 21-16, 10-21), her historic run ensured her place in Indian badminton history as the youngest Indian ever to reach a BWF World Tour final.
Tanvi, currently ranked World No. 66 and part of India’s victorious Asian Team Championship squad, proved her readiness for elite-level competition and signaled a promising future for Indian women’s badminton.
