Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Avinash Jadhav was detained by police early Tuesday morning from his residence in Thane, just hours before a planned counter-rally in Mira Bhayander against traders protesting a recent assault case linked to language politics.
According to the Thane police control room, Jadhav was detained around 3:30 am, following prohibitory orders issued by the police that barred his entry into the Mira Bhayander area.
Background: Food Stall Incident Sparks Tensions
The controversy began when a food stall owner in Bhayander was slapped by alleged MNS activists for not speaking Marathi. The incident triggered a protest by local traders, demanding accountability and action against the accused.
In response, the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti called for a counter-protest rally scheduled for Tuesday, which MNS intended to support.
However, citing law and order concerns, Thane police denied permission for the rally and ramped up security in the Mira Bhayander area.
MNS Reaction and Police Action
The Raj Thackeray-led MNS condemned Jadhav’s detention and posted a video of the incident on social media, calling it a violation of democratic rights.
“This is how voices are silenced. Our leader was picked up in the middle of the night for planning a peaceful demonstration,” the party wrote on X.
Seven other MNS workers had earlier been detained and released after being served notices. Police said the measures were precautionary to prevent further escalation.
What Happens Next?
Police officials reiterated that no permission was granted for any public gathering in the Mira Bhayander area and emphasized the need to maintain communal harmony.
The incident adds to growing tension over language imposition debates in Maharashtra, especially amid increasing scrutiny of political actions tied to Marathi pride and regional identity politics.
