Perth [Australia], January 12: Australian pacer Jhye Richardson has made the decision to undergo shoulder surgery, effectively ending his season and putting him on a tight timeline to recover in time for the Ashes series.
Richardson, who is contracted with Cricket Australia, has undergone two previous surgeries on his right bowling shoulder since first dislocating it during an ODI in March 2019. His most recent surgery took place in 2020, but he has since suffered multiple dislocations, including one in November while celebrating a wicket during a Sheffield Shield match by high-fiving a teammate.
As a result of his surgery, the 28-year-old will be unavailable for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, as they fight for a spot in the playoffs. Richardson was also part of Australia’s squad for the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
Injuries have plagued Richardson’s career since his international debut in 2017. Along with shoulder issues, the right-arm seamer has faced recurring hamstring problems. His shoulder issues have also impacted his fielding, limiting his ability to throw the ball and even execute a dive effectively.
“After careful consideration and many discussions with my medical team, I’ve decided to undergo shoulder surgery to improve stability and reduce the risk of future injury,” Richardson said in a statement. “For the past few years, my shoulder has limited me in the field, and I know how important it is to be fully capable in supporting my teammates.”
He continued, “While it’s a tough decision, especially as it means I won’t be able to finish the season with the Scorchers, this surgery is the best option for a strong and healthy return to cricket. The timing is crucial to ensure I have the best possible build-up, including Shield cricket, leading into next summer. I’ll be giving everything I have in rehab and am determined to return as the best version of myself.”
