There was a lot of drama in the Delhi Assembly as the “phansi-ghar” (execution room) issue got worse on Wednesday. This led to the removal of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP and Leader of Opposition Atishi and other AAP MLAs. The event happened following a heated argument with members of the ruling BJP.
The fight is about a restored space in the Assembly that the last AAP government called a British-era execution chamber to show India’s fight for freedom. The current Speaker, Vijender Gupta, and the BJP, on the other hand, say that the claim is not true.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the AAP government, which was led by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, lied about the existence of a “phansi-ghar” and then used public funds to fix it up. Speaker Vijender Gupta said that a map of the building from 1912 showed that it was a “tiffin room” and not a place where people were executed during the colonial era.
Sanjeev Jha, an AAP MLA, defended the party’s stance, saying that the BJP was trying to “erase colonial atrocities for political convenience.” He said that a lot of British execution locations weren’t officially recorded and that the “double-storey structure” on the 1912 map looks like a hanging chamber.
The BJP, on the other hand, says that the AAP government made up the story. Kapil Mishra, a BJP MLA, said, “They spent crores turning a tiffin room into a fake execution site.” It’s a fake story created to trick people and make their own leaders look good.
Atishi said during the heated argument that the Rekha Gupta-led government was squandering taxpayers’ money by focusing on one problem instead of more important ones. After being told to leave the Assembly, she said, “This isn’t just about a room; it’s about erasing history to go after the legacy of a former chief minister.” We won’t be quiet. As the protest got worse, the Speaker had her and other AAP MLAs taken out of the room.
