New Delhi (India), February 23: Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi was unanimously elected as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly during a meeting of AAP MLAs on Sunday, party leaders confirmed. Senior AAP leader Gopal Rai made the announcement during a press briefing after the party’s legislative meeting.
Rai expressed confidence that Atishi would effectively represent the opposition and fulfill AAP’s responsibility of a constructive and healthy opposition in the Assembly. “In challenging times, Atishi has served the people of Delhi as the CM. AAP will fulfil the responsibility of a healthy opposition,” Rai said.
Atishi thanked AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and the party MLAs for the responsibility, vowing to hold the BJP accountable for its promises. She criticized the BJP for not implementing the Rs 2,500 women’s assistance scheme, which Prime Minister Modi had promised would be passed in the first cabinet meeting. “People of Delhi have selected AAP as the opposition, and a strong opposition knows how to raise the people’s voice in the Assembly. AAP will ensure the BJP fulfills their promises,” Atishi stated.
Despite suffering a major defeat in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, where AAP won only 22 seats compared to BJP’s 48, Atishi reaffirmed AAP’s commitment to ensuring accountability on behalf of Delhi’s residents, particularly its women.
