June 22, 2025: The results for the 2025 assembly bypolls held across five constituencies in four states have been declared. The voting took place on June 19, and the outcomes bring notable gains for regional and national parties alike.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has emerged victorious in two key constituencies. In Ludhiana West (Punjab), AAP’s Sanjeev Arora defeated Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu with a lead of over 3,200 votes. In Visavadar (Gujarat), AAP’s former state president Italia Gopal secured a lead of more than 7,200 votes against BJP’s Kirit Patel. The Congress candidate trailed in third place with 3,855 votes.
In Kerala’s Nilambur seat, Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath won by a decisive margin of over 11,000 votes against Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate M Swaraj. This seat witnessed polling due to the resignation of the sitting legislator.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) successfully retained its hold on the Kadi seat in Gujarat, where Rajendra Chavda won against Congress’ Ramesh Chavda by a significant margin of over 27,000 votes. This by-election was necessitated due to the demise of incumbent MLA Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki in February 2025.
In West Bengal’s Kaliganj seat, Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Alifa Ahmed comfortably defeated Congress’ Kabil Uddin Shaikh by a margin of 19,164 votes, securing a strong win for the ruling party in the state.
These bypolls were held due to different reasons — three due to the deaths of sitting MLAs, and two due to resignations.
