Guwahati (Assam) [India], February 23: Assam is gearing up for a grand celebration of its rich tea garden culture with the upcoming Jhumoir event in Guwahati. Over 8,000 Jhumoir artists from across Assam will gather at the Sarusajai Stadium to perform this traditional dance form that holds cultural significance for the state’s tea garden workers and the Adivasi community. The event will be attended by 61 Heads of Missions, dignitaries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who will also participate in the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit.
Jhumoir, a folk dance that originated in the 19th century, has become synonymous with Assam’s vibrant tea community. Traditionally performed after a day’s hard work in the tea gardens, the energetic dance is a reflection of the joy and camaraderie among workers. The Assam government is showcasing Jhumoir to the world stage as part of the state’s efforts to celebrate its tea industry, which recently marked its 200th anniversary.
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the importance of the Jhumoir dance in the state’s culture and pointed out the government’s efforts to improve the socio-economic conditions of tea garden workers. In addition to organizing this event, the government is building schools, roads, and offering affirmative action for the next generation of tea garden workers.
The Jhumoir performance is expected to be broadcast across the state, including at the 800 major tea estates, allowing workers in rural areas to witness the historic event. Assam’s tea community, which produces nearly 700 million kg of tea annually, plays a crucial role in the state’s economy, and the state government is working to uplift their lives through various initiatives.
This celebration follows the success of last year’s Bihu performance, which entered the Guinness World Records with over 11,000 artists performing. Next, the state plans to showcase the Bagurumba dance of the Bodo community, further promoting Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
