Guwahati (Assam), May 31: At least five people, including children, have lost their lives in landslides triggered by continuous heavy rainfall in Assam’s Kamrup (Metro) district over the last 24 hours, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported on Friday.
A preliminary report released at 9:00 AM today revealed that urban flooding has affected over 10,150 people across three districts — Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), and Cachar — impacting five Revenue Circles.
Three Landslides Reported in Guwahati
The city of Guwahati witnessed three separate landslide incidents yesterday, as unrelenting rains pounded the region. The ASDMA has warned of continued risks of waterlogging, slow traffic, tree falls, and localized landslides, particularly in hilly or vulnerable zones.
City Paralyzed by Waterlogging
Several major localities in Guwahati have reported severe waterlogging, including:
- Rukminigaon
- Beltola Survey
- Hatigaon
- Geetanagar
- Anil Nagar
- Lakhimi Nagar
- Jatia
- Maligaon
- Panjabari
Citizens have raised concerns over chronic flooding, urging the government to address drainage and infrastructure issues.
“It has been raining for 3–4 days straight. Even mild rain leads to flooding in these areas. The government should visit and solve this recurring issue,” said a local resident.
Another added, “Every monsoon is the same. Vehicles stall, and people are terrified of accidents or electrocution in waterlogged areas.”
Government Response
At a press conference held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the gravity of the situation:
“The situation is not good and will likely remain so tomorrow. We are monitoring closely. Due to heavy rainfall across Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, widespread disruptions have occurred.”
In response, the state government has announced emergency measures for June 1:
- Special casual leave for all state government employees in Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro)
- Closure of schools and colleges
- Advisory to private establishments to take appropriate safety precautions
Red Alert and Rescue Readiness
While rescue operations are underway, emergency teams have been placed on standby. Authorities are urging residents in low-lying or hilly areas to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.
