Assam Government Continues Eviction Drive At Rengma Forest

The Assam government has started the second phase of its eviction drive inside the Rengma reserve forest in the Golaghat district. The operation, which began on Monday, aims to remove encroachments from approximately 26 hectares of land, displacing 41 families.

An official statement confirmed that the administration has already completed the first phase of the eviction drive at Rengma on August 2, where around 9,000 bighas of land were cleared, affecting approximately 1,500 families. The statement also noted that the current phase of the drive is focused on encroached areas in Haldibari.

During the exercise, authorities removed 41 households, demolished 65 illegal structures, and cleared nearly 26 hectares of notified forest land. The operation is being carried out by the Forest Department in close coordination with the Golaghat district administration and Assam Police.

According to the administration, the action was taken after due notices were issued to the occupants and was executed in compliance with “prevailing legal norms and environmental safeguards.” The government stated that this initiative is part of its ongoing mission to “restore encroached forest land, strengthen ecological security and safeguard the integrity of reserved forests across the state.”
