Guwahati (Assam) [India] : The Assam government has launched a statewide crackdown on individuals allegedly posting controversial or pro-Pakistan content on social media in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, 10 people have been arrested so far for attempting to “justify” or whitewash the terrorist attack. The state urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any such activities to the nearest authorities.
“Strict action is underway against those attempting to justify or whitewash the Pahalgam Terrorist Attack,” the Assam CMO posted on X. “Everyone is urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any such incidents.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that arrests were made across the state, including Cachar, Karimganj, and Kamrup districts. He revealed that Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya and Md. Imran Hussain Borbhuiya were arrested by Cachar Police for sharing pro-Pakistan content. Another individual, Md Mustak Ahmed, was arrested for posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on Facebook.
A youth from Hajo town was also arrested on Saturday morning under similar charges. CM Sarma warned that those expressing support for Pakistan—whether directly or indirectly—will face stringent legal action, including charges under the National Security Act (NSA).
“We will take strict action,” Sarma stated. “Whoever supports Pakistan directly or indirectly, we will apply NSA against them.”
This comes as part of India’s larger response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. In response, the Centre has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and taken other diplomatic measures to isolate Pakistan.
