Dima Hasao (Assam) [India] – A body has been recovered from the collapsed coal mine in the 3 Kilo area of Umrangso, where nine miners have been trapped since January 6. The recovery was made by divers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), according to a statement from NDRF officials.
The rescue operations, led by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other agencies, resumed early today after being temporarily halted the previous evening. The mission is continuing around the clock to locate and rescue the trapped miners.
Updates on Rescue Efforts
NDRF Deputy Commandant N. Tiwari stated, “The operation was closed yesterday evening, and we resumed it this morning with full force. We are committed to reaching the miners as soon as possible and rescuing them.”
Efforts on the ground are being bolstered by additional support, including personnel from the Navy, who are expected to join the operation.
A survivor from the mine described the harrowing incident:
“A lot of people
were inside the mine when the situation turned dire. Suddenly, water started filling up rapidly, and there was chaos. Around 30-35 people managed to escape, but unfortunately, about 15-16 were still trapped.”
Investigation and Legal Action
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced an FIR registration and the arrest of one individual linked to the incident.
In a social media post, CM Sarma said, “The police have registered an FIR under Umrangso PS Case No: 02/2025, citing violations under Sections 3(5)/105 BNS, r/w Section 21(1) of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. Initial findings suggest the mine was operating illegally. One Punish Nunisa has been arrested in connection with the case.”
The Chief Minister also sought assistance from Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy, who has directed Coal India Limited to provide full support to the rescue mission.
Ongoing Challenges
Rescuers are navigating significant obstacles, including water accumulation and unstable mine conditions. Divers and specialized personnel continue to work tirelessly, with hopes of locating more miners.
Authorities have assured that all possible resources are being deployed to manage the crisis and prevent further casualties. The situation remains critical, and updates are expected as the rescue operation progresses.
