Assam CM Alleges Congress MP’s Wife Has Links To Pakistan’s ISI, SIT Probe Likely

Guwahati (Assam) [India]: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma intensified his allegations against Elizabeth Gogoi, wife of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, over alleged links with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He stated that there is “definite information” of her visiting Pakistan even after marriage and hinted at forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said a regular case should be filed to investigate her passport and visa records. He also suggested that the entire network, including sympathizers, would come under scrutiny.

“We have definite information that Elizabeth Gogoi (wife of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi) has visited Pakistan even after her marriage. Whether she went with the MP or alone, these things will be confirmed. Many details are coming out,” Sarma said.

The Assam cabinet is set to meet, where a decision on forming an SIT may be taken.

“Tomorrow, the Assam Cabinet is going to meet and probably in that meeting, we will take a decision to form an SIT because unless a regular case is registered, the passport and visa of the alleged person involved will not be investigated. We will also investigate the entire ecosystem, including sympathizers. We are going to conduct a detailed investigation,” he added.

The Chief Minister further suggested that there is a need to investigate whether the ISI attempted to infiltrate the office of the Assam CM during that period.

Political Row Escalates

A heated exchange of words has erupted between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Gaurav Gogoi over these allegations. Sarma questioned how an individual with supposed links to the ISI could be in the same household as an Indian MP.

“How can ISI and R&AW live together in the same house?… We are not accusing anyone, but we want some facts to come out. I have some questions. Firstly, is it true or false that the MP’s wife worked in Pakistan? Secondly, has she taken Indian citizenship or not? Thirdly, if the MP had visited Pakistan during this time and while meeting the Pakistan ambassador, did he take permission from the External Affairs Ministry or not?… How can ISI and R&AW stay in the same house? ISI is Pakistan, and R&AW is India; it is not possible for them to live together,” Sarma said on Friday.

Gaurav Gogoi, at the center of this controversy, has dismissed the allegations as “laughable” and politically motivated.

“If my wife is an ISI agent of Pakistan, then I am an R&AW agent of India. I don’t mind if a family against whom there are various cases and several allegations makes accusations against me. The Assam Chief Minister is making these allegations only to divert attention from the allegations against him,” Gogoi said.

He further announced legal action against the BJP for spreading what he called “malicious and baseless” claims.

“The BJP has gone to extreme measures to defame me and my family. Their allegations are malicious and baseless. I will be taking the appropriate legal action,” he wrote on X.

Sarma Alleges Foreign Influence in Assam Congress

Sarma has also claimed that “foreign powers, led by George Soros’ ecosystem,” played a role in Assam Congress’s decisions in 2014. He raised concerns over a 2015 meeting where Gaurav Gogoi, then a first-term MP, allegedly led a delegation to meet the Pakistani High Commissioner in New Delhi.

“Sooner or later, it will be known how foreign powers, led by George Soros’ ecosystem, influenced a major decision of Assam Congress in 2014. The truth will emerge in due course,” Sarma stated.

The Assam Chief Minister also suggested that the Congress MP must answer serious questions regarding his and his wife’s alleged links to the ISI, particularly concerning their engagement with young minds at the Pakistan High Commission.

With political tensions rising, all eyes are now on the Assam Cabinet meeting, where a formal SIT probe may be initiated.
