Assam Beef Ban Sparks Political Row: Congress MLA Criticizes State Government

The Assam government’s decision to ban the consumption of beef in restaurants and public places has sparked controversy, with Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed accusing the BJP-led government of promoting the agenda of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Ahmed criticized the move, calling it an attack on constitutional rights:

“The BJP party has been attacking our Constitution and constitutional mandates. The Indian Constitution has given freedom to every person of India to have their own source of food and their choice of dress. From the very beginning, they have been against the Muslim population and also against the lower-caste Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists. It is against our Constitution and an attack on our Constitution,” Ahmed told ANI on Wednesday.

Assam’s Beef Ban Announcement

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision to prohibit the consumption and serving of beef in any public space, including hotels and restaurants. The move comes under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which was initially aimed at regulating cattle slaughter near temples and other sensitive areas.

Sarma stated:

“We had passed the law on prohibition of cattle slaughter three years ago, and it was quite successful. Now, in Assam, we have decided that beef will not be served in any restaurant, hotel, or public place. From today, we have completely decided to stop the consumption of beef in public spaces.”

Previously, the restrictions were limited to areas surrounding temples. However, the new ban expands these restrictions across the entire state.

Political and Social Reactions

The announcement has ignited a political debate, with opposition leaders questioning the broader implications of such measures. Sherman Ali Ahmed accused the government of targeting minority communities under the guise of cultural preservation:

“They are following the principles of RSS… It’s not about cattle preservation but about targeting Muslims and other minority communities.”

Conversely, BJP leaders and supporters have defended the decision, citing cultural and religious sentiments. Dilip Saikia, BJP MP from Darrang-Udalguri, emphasized that the decision aligns with “Sanatana” cultural values, denying any communal motive.

Cabinet Expansion Scheduled

In related developments, Chief Minister Sarma confirmed that a state cabinet expansion is scheduled for December 7. The expansion is expected to focus on administrative reforms and strengthening governance.

Public Opinion

The beef ban has divided public opinion in Assam, with supporters praising it as a step toward cultural preservation and critics viewing it as an infringement on personal freedoms. The move’s broader impact on the state’s social fabric and minority communities remains a contentious issue.
