Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers: India Suffer 0-1 Defeat To Bangladesh, Remain Winless In Group C

India’s disappointing run in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers continued on Tuesday as the Blue Tigers slumped to a 0-1 defeat against Bangladesh in their penultimate Group C clash. With both teams already out of contention for a spot in the continental tournament, the match held little significance on paper — but the result added another layer of frustration to India’s forgettable campaign.

Playing in front of a packed National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh made a bright start and struck the decisive blow early in the 11th minute. Sheikh Morsalin found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into raptures and giving his side their first win of the qualifiers.

India, however, had a golden opportunity to equalise in the 31st minute. Lallianzuala Chhangte found himself with a clear sight at goal after Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma was caught completely out of position. But Bangladesh defender Hamza Choudhury produced a crucial goal-line header to deny what looked like a sure-shot equaliser.

Tensions briefly flared during the first half when players from both sides got involved in a pushing and shoving incident near the touchline. The referee swiftly intervened and restored order before matters escalated further.

India’s qualification hopes had already evaporated on October 14 following a 1-2 defeat to Singapore in Goa, where they surrendered a 1-0 lead. Tuesday’s loss leaves India winless after five matches, with only two points earned from two draws. This was their third defeat in the third-round qualifiers, cementing their position at the bottom of the four-team table.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, climbed to third place with five points after securing their maiden win of the campaign.

The two teams had earlier played out a goalless draw in the first leg on March 25 in Shillong. Tuesday’s match also marked India’s first appearance in Bangladesh in 22 years — their last visit was during the 2003 SAFF Gold Cup, where the hosts clinched a 2-1 victory at the same venue.

In terms of global football rankings, India currently sit at 136th in the FIFA rankings, while Bangladesh are positioned at 183rd.

India will now prepare for their final Group C fixture, set to be played at home against Hong Kong on March 31, 2026, as they aim to end their lacklustre qualifying journey on a positive note.
