January 5, 2025: On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) welcomed the inauguration of new metro and rapid rail lines in the national capital, highlighting the progress made in expanding Delhi’s public transport network under the AAP government.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kejriwal congratulated the people of Delhi on the inauguration of the new metro line and the laying of the foundation stone for another one. He pointed out that since the formation of the AAP government, Delhi Metro had expanded by 200 km and that work was ongoing on an additional 250 km. Kejriwal took pride in the rapid growth of Delhi Metro under his party’s leadership, emphasizing its pivotal role in enhancing public transportation in the city.
Delhi’s Minister of Transport, Atishi, also expressed her enthusiasm, praising the collaborative efforts between the Delhi government, the central government, and the Delhi Metro to transform the city’s public transport system. She highlighted the launch of the first phase of the Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar Rapid Rail, connecting Delhi to the National Capital Region (NCR), as well as the inauguration of the metro line from Krishna Park to Janakpuri West. Atishi noted that these developments, which are part of a joint venture between the Delhi Metro, the Central Government, and the Delhi Government, are positioning Delhi as a global model for modern public transport.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated several key infrastructure projects in the city. These included the 13 km stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, connecting Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar, worth around ₹4,600 crore. He also inaugurated a 2.8 km stretch of the Delhi Metro Phase-IV, connecting Janakpuri to Krishna Park, valued at approximately ₹1,200 crore. Additionally, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the 26.5 km Rithala-Kundli section of the Delhi Metro Phase-IV, a ₹6,230 crore project aimed at improving connectivity between Delhi and Haryana’s north-western regions.
While the inauguration of these projects was celebrated by the BJP and the central government as a major step forward for Delhi’s infrastructural development, AAP leaders focused on the role their government played in the city’s metro expansion, underscoring the collaborative nature of these initiatives and the crucial role of the AAP government in shaping the city’s public transport landscape.
