New Delhi [India], June 8 : Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap fired back at Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos after Sarandos questioned whether Netflix’s decision to launch its India original programming with Sacred Games in 2018 was strategically sound.
During a recent podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Sarandos suggested that Netflix might have fared better by starting with more “populist” content instead of the gritty thriller. This comment sparked a strong reaction from Kashyap, who co-created Sacred Games, one of India’s landmark streaming shows.
Kashyap took to Instagram, posting a screenshot of Sarandos’ remarks and sarcastically responding, “He should have started with Saas Bahu… he would have done well. Which he is doing now. I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling, but @tedsarandos is the definition of dumb – that I didn’t know. Good to discover that. This explains everything now.”
Sacred Games, starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was praised for its compelling narrative and production quality, marking a significant milestone for Indian streaming content. Though its second season received mixed reviews and the show was not renewed further, it remains an influential series in India’s digital entertainment space.
