Anurag Kashyap Apologises For Casteist Remarks, Says “I Forgot My Limits In Anger”

Mumbai (Maharashtra), April 22: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a public apology following backlash over his alleged casteist remarks against the Brahmin community, acknowledging that he “forgot his limits” while responding in anger to a comment on social media.

The controversy erupted after Kashyap posted a critical message regarding the censorship of his upcoming film Phule—a biopic on social reformer Jyotirao Phule, who dedicated his life to fighting caste discrimination. The post sparked outrage, with several individuals filing police complaints accusing the filmmaker of hurting religious and social sentiments and making objectionable comments about Brahmins.

Addressing the issue via Instagram, the Gangs of Wasseypur director offered a heartfelt apology:

“In anger, while replying to someone, I forgot my limits. I spoke badly about the entire Brahmin community—a community that has many people who have been, and still are, important in my life. Today, all of them are hurt by me. My family is hurt. Many intellectuals whom I respect are hurt by my anger and the way I expressed myself.”

He further clarified that his remarks were directed at a specific comment, not the entire community, and admitted that he had deviated from the actual issue.

“By saying such things, I strayed from the topic. I apologise from the bottom of my heart to this community, to whom I did not mean to say such things. It was written in anger in response to someone’s cheap comment.”

Kashyap assured his followers that he would work on managing his anger and engage in future discussions using appropriate language.

“I promise this will not happen again. I will work on my anger. I hope you will forgive me.”

This marks his second apology in connection with the controversy. On Friday night, Kashyap had posted a statement claiming that his original post had been taken out of context, while condemning the threats directed toward his family and friends.

“This is my apology—not for my post—but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred,” he said.

He also appealed to the Brahmin community to not target his family, stating:

“Brahmins, please spare the women—scriptures at least teach this much decency.”

Meanwhile, a formal complaint has been lodged by Anoop Shukla in Indore, accusing the filmmaker of hurting the religious sentiments of the Brahmin community.
