Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 6: Ahead of Eid-al-Adha, the Andhra Pradesh Department of Animal Husbandry has issued a clear set of guidelines for animal slaughter, emphasizing compliance with animal welfare and slaughter laws in the state.
As per the directive, the slaughter of goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, fish, and non-productive buffaloes is permitted. However, the slaughter of cows, calves, and camels is strictly prohibited in Andhra Pradesh, in line with the Andhra Pradesh Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Preservation Act, 1977.
Director Dr. T. Damodara Naidu stated, “Anyone found slaughtering cows, calves, or camels, or transporting animals in overloaded vehicles, will face criminal action under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and relevant state laws.”
Dr. Naidu also directed veterinary officers at field level to stay alert during the Bakrid celebrations and to coordinate with officials from the Revenue, Police, Municipal, and Panchayati Raj departments to prevent any unauthorised or illegal animal slaughter.
Citizens seeking clarity on permissible practices are encouraged to contact their local veterinary officer. The government has appealed to the public to respect and adhere to Animal Welfare and Cow Protection laws during the festival.
