Amritsar (Punjab) [India], January 9: Tarsem Singh, the father of Independent MP and ‘Waris Punjab De’ Chief Amritpal Singh, has strongly criticized the imposition of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against his son, describing it as a “conspiracy” aimed at preventing his family from launching a political party.
Tarsem Singh said, “When the NSA (National Security Act) charges against him were set to end, the government imposed UAPA. Now, as we are planning to form a political party, it is clearly a conspiracy to stop us. Bhagwant Mann’s anti-Sikh mindset is being exposed. There is no evidence or investigation, yet such charges are being used to defame Amritpal.”
Earlier on Thursday, Faridkot Police Superintendent confirmed that UAPA charges had been filed against the jailed MP. “The UAPA charges were extended based on the investigation into the Gurpreet Hari murder case, which also involves Arsh Dalla, a designated terrorist,” said SP Jasmeet Singh, adding that further details would not be shared as the investigation is ongoing.
Tarsem Singh also addressed the earlier imposition of the NSA on his son, claiming it was a politically motivated move. “The NSA was imposed because of political fear. The people of Punjab are highly supportive of Amritpal, and they fear losing their seats,” he stated.
Amritpal Singh’s father confirmed plans to launch a political party on January 14, in Sri Muktsar Sahib, coinciding with the Maghi festival. “A working committee will be announced, which will decide on the party’s constitution and other matters,” he added.
Tarsem Singh had previously alleged that his family had been placed under house arrest by Punjab police on January 7, following intelligence suggesting his involvement in a Quami Insaaf Morcha protest. “The police have been stationed outside my residence and I was informed that I was under house arrest due to my supposed participation in the protest,” he said.
DSP Arun Sharma confirmed the deployment of police to maintain law and order, stating that the family members of Amritpal Singh had been placed under house arrest as part of precautionary measures.
