Amritsar (Punjab) [India], January 7: Tarsem Singh, the father of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief and independent MP Amritpal Singh, claimed on Tuesday that he and his family had been placed under house arrest by the Punjab Police.
According to Tarsem Singh, the house arrest was ordered after authorities received information suggesting that he was involved in a protest organized by the Quami Insaaf Morcha. Police were stationed outside his home, restricting the movement of all family members.
Speaking to ANI, Tarsem Singh said, “Police have been deployed here, and I was informed that I have been placed under house arrest. When I asked the police for the reason, I was told it was due to the information that I was going to take part in a protest by the Quami Insaaf Morcha. All members of the household have been placed under house arrest.”
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Arun Sharma confirmed the action, stating, “To maintain law and order, police have been deployed as per instructions from senior officers. The family members of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, who reportedly joined the Quami Insaaf Morcha protest today, have been placed under house arrest.”
Earlier, Tarsem Singh had appealed to the people of Punjab to attend the launch of his new political party on January 14. He stated that the regional party would focus on saving Punjab and its cultural heritage. “We urge the people of Punjab to come in large numbers to the ‘Panthic’ gathering at Sri Muktsar Sahib on January 14. We will announce a regional party dedicated to saving Punjab and the ‘panth’. A five-member committee will also be formed to make further decisions,” Tarsem Singh told ANI.
The political party, which Tarsem Singh plans to launch on January 14 in Sri Muktsar Sahib during the Maghi festival, will focus on issues such as drugs, conversions, and farmers’ welfare. “I appeal to the people of Punjab to support the party and help save Punjab from various challenges,” he added.
Amritpal Singh, who was elected as an independent MP from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib parliamentary constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is currently incarcerated in Dibrugarh district in Assam. After returning to Punjab in 2022 following the death of Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu, Amritpal Singh became the leader of Sidhu’s pro-Khalistani organization, Waris Punjab De.
Amritpal Singh was arrested in February 2023 after leading a protest at the Ajnala police station, where he and his supporters clashed with police in an attempt to free one of his aides, who had been detained for making pro-Khalistan statements. Despite his incarceration, Amritpal Singh was granted a four-day custody parole to attend the swearing-in ceremony for his Lok Sabha seat in Delhi.
