Another Hindu Man Lynched In Bangladesh: Amrit Mondal Beaten To Death Over Extortion Claims

The incident occurred around 11:00 PM on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at Hosendanga village. The victim, identified as Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was a resident of the same village and reportedly led a local group known as the “Samrat Bahini.”

The Fatal Confrontation

According to police accounts and local residents, the violence erupted when Mondal and his associates allegedly targeted the home of a local resident, Shahidul Islam.

  • The Allegation: Mondal reportedly demanded extortion money from the family. When the owner was not found, he allegedly assaulted the owner’s son.
  • The Mob Response: The family raised an alarm, shouting “robbers,” which prompted a large crowd of villagers to gather at the spot.
  • The Lynching: While Mondal’s associates managed to flee, he was caught and severely beaten by the mob. Police rescued him in critical condition, but he was declared dead at the Pangsha Upazila Health Complex at approximately 2:00 AM.

Criminal Record or Targeted Violence?

The Bangladeshi interim government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has moved quickly to frame the incident as a criminal matter rather than a communal attack.

AuthorityStatement / Action
Interim GovernmentAsserted the incident was “not communal” but stemmed from “terrorist activities.”
Pangsha PoliceConfirmed Mondal was a “listed criminal” with cases of murder and extortion pending since 2023.
Arrests MadeOne associate, Mohammad Selim, was arrested; a pistol and a pipe gun were recovered from him.

Police further alleged that Mondal had recently returned from India, where he had been in hiding for a long period, to resume his activities in Rajbari.

A Pattern of Unrest

This lynching comes just days after the horrific death of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old garment worker who was beaten and set on fire over unverified blasphemy claims in Mymensingh.

  • Diplomatic Tensions: The recurring violence against Hindus has led to a significant strain in ties, with India recently summoning the Bangladesh High Commissioner for the second time in a month to express deep concern.
  • Domestic Crisis: These incidents are occurring against a backdrop of national unrest following the assassination of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which has triggered widespread protests and a breakdown in law and order.

The government has promised that legal action will be taken against all those involved in the Rajbari lynching, stating that “extrajudicial activity” has no place in the “New Bangladesh.”
