New Delhi, February 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired an important meeting on Friday to review the law and order situation in the national capital. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Home Minister Ashish Sood, and senior Delhi government officers attended the meeting, which was also joined by Union Home Secretary, the IB Chief, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The primary focus of the meeting was to discuss strategies to enhance coordination between the newly formed Delhi government and the Delhi Police. It also aimed at strengthening policing measures to tackle emerging threats to law and order in the city. Shah has been closely monitoring security situations across India and has stressed the importance of a robust law enforcement mechanism in Delhi, given its status as the national capital.
The newly elected Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood, participated in the meeting, which also saw the presence of Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and other senior police officials.
Earlier, on February 18, the Union Home Minister highlighted the urgent need to implement provisions for “trial in absentia” and the full enforcement of new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir by April 2025. During a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Shah emphasized the use of technology to speed up the judicial process under the three new criminal laws – the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023 – which replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.
Shah urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to regularly review the implementation of the new laws on a monthly, fortnightly, and weekly basis at the levels of the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, and Director General of Police, respectively.
