Amit Narang Appointed As India’s Next Ambassador To Slovenia

New Delhi [India]: Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Amit Narang, currently serving as the Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Slovenia.

“Shri Amit Narang (IFS: 2001), presently Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Slovenia,” stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a press release on Thursday.

Narang, born on January 28, 1975, is expected to take up the assignment shortly. He has been serving as India’s Ambassador to Oman since October 24, 2021. Before this, he headed the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) Division of the MEA, managing India’s bilateral relations with its key maritime neighbors.

His diplomatic career spans diverse roles, including Chief Vigilance Officer of the MEA and oversight of India’s consular and visa policy, focusing on welfare initiatives for the overseas Indian diaspora.

Narang, proficient in Chinese, has served in the People’s Republic of China twice. From 2003-2007, he worked on bilateral economic and commercial relations, and from 2016-2018, he was the Deputy Head of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Beijing.

He played a pivotal role in global negotiations, including as India’s lead negotiator at the United Nations for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.

Between 2010-2013, Narang managed the United Nations portfolio for the MEA and later served as Counselor at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York (2013-2016). During this time, he represented India in climate change negotiations at multiple UNFCCC meetings, culminating in the adoption of the Paris Agreement at COP21 in 2015.

Narang was also instrumental in the adoption of the UN Resolution designating June 21 as International Yoga Day.
